SUMMARY:Emergency Preparedness in the NICU
DESCRIPTION:Disasters disproportionally affect vulnerable\, technology-dependent people\, including preterm and critically ill newborn infants. It is important for health care providers to be aware of and prepared for the potential consequences of disasters for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Neonatal intensive care personnel can provide specialized expertise for their hospital\, community\, and regional emergency preparedness plans and can help develop institutional surge capacity for mass critical care\, including equipment\, medications\, personnel\, and facility resources. This webinar will focus on how to develop a plan for disasters in the NICU\, what resources are available\, and considerations such as family care\, evacuation\, medical countermeasures\, nutrition\, and post-disaster recovery. This webinar is being presented in concert with the release of the “Disaster Preparedness in Neonatal Intensive Care Units” clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Fetus and Newborn and the AAP Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council in the May 2017 edition of Pediatrics. Submit questions ahead of time to DisasterReady@aap.org or live during the Q&A portion of the webinar.
