Asturias MD\, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Colorado School of Public Health \nFor 20 years\, Dr. Asturias has advocated for equitable health strategies in Latin America and globally.  Dr. Asturias graduated as a medical doctor from the San Carlos University in Guatemala in 1989 and was board certified in Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in 1995. Trained in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine\, he is an international leader in vaccine research and health care epidemiology. Through the conduction of epidemiological studies and the inquiry into efficacy and safety issues of vaccines against poliomyelitis\, pertussis\, Haemophilus influenzae type b\, pneumococcus and E. coli. After 13 years of practicing in Guatemala and leading the reengineering efforts of the Guatemalan Ministry of Health and later advocating for resource poor countries in Central and Latin America\, he moved to Colorado to develop the efforts in pediatric global health. \n\n\n\nAlways interested in healthcare equity\, Dr. Asturias was instrumental in creating a comprehensive health clinic in rural southwest Guatemala staffed in part by students\, residents and faculty of the University of Colorado School of Medicine\, Children’s Hospital Colorado and the Colorado School of Public Health. By integrating data-driven clinical care\, education and research\, his goal is to develop sustainable and scalable systems that improve value-based care for the children of Colorado and the world.
