Overview and Target Audience
Research shows that adverse early childhood experiences (ACEs) influence a child’s long-term physical and mental health, cognitive development and academic and social success. These presentations will provide strategies for recognizing and addressing ACEs in the primary care setting, for pediatricians, family practitioners, and other health professionals caring for children.
Objectives
Upon completion of Dr. Murray’s talk, participants should be able to:
Explain to families the direct connection between their child’s environment and experiences, and the child’s cognitive, emotional, social, and academic future.
Identify specific strategies to help parents structure the child’s day, and communicate, read, play, and discipline in a way that enhances the child’s social and emotional skills.
Discuss difficult cases and explore approaches based on the principles of Promoting First Relations.
Upon completion of Dr. Stenmark’s talk, participants should be able to:
Recognize the prevalence and impact of food insecurity on households with children.
Describe interventions which have been shown to improve food security.
Implement changes in the practice setting which can improve food security, and know about opportunities for advocacy on this issue.
