Colorado Department of Public Health

The Colorado Immunization Branch, at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, works to reduce vaccine-preventable disease by developing and implementing programs designed to positively influence the uptake of immunizations across the lifespan. The Immunization Branch utilizes a variety of strategies to promote education, optimize vaccine resources, assure access to vaccines and maintain the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS), a confidential, population-based, computerized information system that collects and consolidates immunization data for Coloradans of all ages from a variety of sources and provides tools for designing and sustaining effective immunization strategies at the provider and program levels. The Immunization Branch also operates the Federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, the Federal Section 317 program, and all immunization education and outreach activities. CO Newborn Screening Program

The Colorado Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program (CONBSP) aims to improve newborn’s lives through early detection of 39 life threatening genetic disorders for all Colorado and Wyoming newborns. CONBSP initially began testing for Phenylketonuria (PKU) in 1965.  Annually, there are approximately 68,000 births in Colorado and Wyoming. Currently, there are requests that come from over 800 unique submitters. This translates into reporting more than 130,000 samples using 9 different testing methods for more than 700,000 individual tests annually. There are 700 affected children identified each year due to this testing. The CONBSP is required by statute to operate 6 days a week including holidays in order to ensure timely reporting of abnormal results. Babies with these conditions often appear normal at birth but could develop signs and symptoms later in life. CONBSP performs screening tests for all newborns on an opt out basis. All testing, reporting, education, and stakeholder engagement is performed by 21 full-time staff members. The program is cash funded provided by a one-time fee of $111.00 for each child tested. The program is a part of the Colorado State Public Health Laboratory within the Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) at CDPHE.
