Perinatal substance use is a major public health concern in Colorado and throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Perinatal providers, hospital administrators, and clinical support staff are critical to improving outcomes for substance exposed newborns in the Rocky Mountain region.
After this event, participants will report increased knowledge of evidence-based practices for the assessment, treatment, and support of substance-exposed infants and their families during the prenatal, birth hospitalization, and postpartum periods. Participants will be able to apply evidence-based care transition strategies, including interdisciplinary communication, discharge planning, and referral processes, to improve continuity of care for substance-exposed infants and their families during case study and small group discussions.
Objectives:
- Apply core elements of Plans of Safe Care to facilitate coordinated transitions from hospital to home for substance-exposed infants and families.
- Implement evidence-based dyadic care strategies that support maternal recovery and optimize infant outcomes across the perinatal period.
- Utilize trauma-informed and stigma-free communication approaches to improve engagement, care coordination, and family-centered care for affected dyads.
- Identify strategies to promote provider well-being and mitigate burnout when caring for substance-exposed infants and their families.
