The eyes are the window to the soul (and in medicine, a window to the brain!) and can be an important sign for whether a child has experienced trauma. Eye trauma can be seen in cases of physical abuse including abusive head trauma (AHT) and retinal hemorrhages are an important indicator of possible AHT but they are also found in other conditions. Distinguishing the number, type, location, and pattern of retinal hemorrhages is important in evaluating a differential diagnosis. This webinar will review the revised policy, The Eye Examination in the Evaluation of Child Abuse, reviewing the indications for an ophthalmology examination, the orbital and ocular injuries resulting from abuse, and provide an update on retinal hemorrhages and AHT.
